History of Kennett Square, PA
Like many of the other towns in the area, the Lenape Native Americans were the original inhabitants of Kennett Square. When the city was colonized as part of a land grant from William Penn, it was named Kennett Square. Some of the founders grew carnations and wanted to use the soil beneath the raised garden beds. Using it to grow mushrooms was where the mushroom craze got started in Kennett Square. Kennett Square is also famous for playing an integral role in the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to the north to gain their freedom.
