Hardwood Blog

While the thought of buying hardwood floors may seem daunting, they are a beautiful addition to any home and an investment in that home’s future. With a little knowledge, you’ll be ready to move forward with getting the floors of your dreams! For tips and tricks about how to clean and care for your hardwood floors, to articles about the latest trends and styles in hardwood floors – you’ll find it all on the Hudson Hardwood blog.

Considering Buying Hardwood Floors?

With the many options available today it’s smart to do some homework first before you purchase hardwood floors. There are many varieties and styles available, the basics being solid or engineered planks. Solid planks come from a single piece of wood while engineered are comprised of several planks laminated or glued together.

Long strip, Exotic, Hand Scraped, and Distressed are terms used to describe the plank origin and the finish on the planks. Planks can come finished or unfinished. Unfinished planks allow them to be finished once they are installed, giving a more customized look.

Depending on the type of floor they are going over, hardwood floors can be installed in several ways. The most common is by nails or staple. Other options include glue, adhesive-less, and floating.

Cleaning & recoating

Hardwood floors can add a distinguished look to almost any room in your home. They add to the warmth and coziness of living rooms and dens or give a professional finish to your home office.

Hardwood floors in bedrooms, often covered with an area rug under the bed, give bedrooms a distinguished and stylish appearance. While hardwood floors don’t mix well with water, they can be a great addition to kitchens. Just make sure to clean up any spills quickly!

The only rooms that don’t do well with hardwood floors are bathrooms and laundry rooms. Most hardwood floors cannot withstand the water and moisture in these rooms.

Care and Cleaning of Hardwood Floors

Some people are hesitant to purchase hardwood floors because they’re afraid of the time and effort it will take to maintain them. Rest assured, hardwood floors are extremely durable. While scratches and stains can happen, there are ways to take care of them to keep your floors looking great for years.

Hudson Hardwood recommends no harsh chemical or cleaners. Over time these can build up and make your floors look bad. Occasionally, vinegar can help clean hardwood floors, but only in moderation.

Scratches can also occur from moving furniture or other of life’s unforeseen happenings. Not to worry though, with a few short steps you can repair a scratch on your own. Visit our blog to see detailed instructions on “Hardwood Floor Scratch Repair.”

It is, of course, a good idea to have your hardwood floors professionally cleaned and re-coated when they do eventually start to show signs of wear and tear. Hudson Hardware can help with this. Learn more on our Cleaning and Recoating page.

Service Areas

Philadelphia and its surrounding towns, boroughs, and counties offer residents a wide variety of types of homes to live in. The area is home to everything from historic row homes, to large estates, to modern high rises.

Hudson Hardwood sees many clients looking to restore old, worn, floors that may seem beyond repair. In many cases, we can bring the floors back to their original beauty and maintain their historic charm.

Or maybe you just moved into a new home and the floors are in decent shape but could use a good cleaning and a recoating to help maintain them. We can help with that too.

In cases where the hardwood floors are beyond repair, we’ll work with you to choose a new style and color to best fit your home and your decorating aesthetic.

Common Hardwood Floor Challenges

A few common issues we see with hardwood floors are water damage, matching existing colors and styles, and maintenance. Pennsylvania weather spans the gamut from hot and humid summers to cold and dry winters. All of this can have an effect on your hardwood floors.

Burst pipes and water damage caused by freezing or disrepair can wreak havoc on hardwood floors. Stains, discoloration, and even buckling of individual boards can occur. Hudson Hardwood can perform hardwood floor repairs on sections of a floor, or on an entire room.

We see many clients who have wear and tear in some areas of their home, but don’t need to replace all of their hardwood floors. Hudson Hardwood can match the color and style of existing floors to keep the look consistent throughout your home. We can also match the wood on stairs.

Maintaining hardwood floors does take some care and effort. Keeping them clean and free of debris can greatly help reduce scratching. Regularly cleaning and recoating your hardwood floors, also known as a “buff and coat,” will give them life for years to some.

Hardwood Floors Today

Many of the areas we service date back to the 1800 and 1900s when hardwood floors were common in larger estates. Flooring has changed a lot since then, but hardwood floors remain top of the line in home decor. Today’s technology and products gives us more hardwood flooring options than ever before to achieve the looks our customers want.

Traditional hardwood floors are made up of one plank size and then a consistent stain throughout. Today, consumers can choose from gray or bleached hardwood floors. Styles and patterns are even seeing a comeback including herringbone. Some customers are modernizing the look of their floors by laying planks at an angle rather than horizontally.

A few adventurous homeowners are even experimenting with the latest trend of mixing plank sizes. This unexpected style can add interest and depth to any room.
