Ardmore History

Ardmore, PA is located along the Main Line in Delaware and Montgomery counties. Originally named Athensville, the town came to be known as Ardmore after it was named by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1873. A popular destination in Ardmore is Suburban Square, an open-air retail area that is often considered to be one of the original “shopping centers” in the United States. Suburban Square is across from the Ardmore train station and was home to the first suburban location of Strawbridge & Clothier, a major department store that opened there in 1930.

Residents of Ardmore enjoy South Ardmore Park, which is actually located in neighboring Wynnewood. The Ardmore Public Library is located on South Ardmore Avenue. With a current population of just over 13,000, Ardmore has the largest population of any town on the Main Line. Students attend schools in either Lower Merion School District or the School District of Haverford Township, depending on where in Ardmore they live.

Easily accessible by Septa and Amtrak, the town holds several popular events throughout the year. These include The Clover Market, Ardmore Restaurant Week, and Cricket Cringle.

The Clover Market is held in the spring and the fall and features tents with artisan wares. Ardmore Restaurant Week highlights the area’s culinary delights. Cricket Cringle is an open-air market held around the holidays.

A visit to Ardmore’s Farmers Market and the Ardmore Music Hall rounds out any visit to the town.
